Week in Review-Week #10-2012-2013

We are in Sonlight Core D week #10

Scripture Memory this week:

1 Corinthians 16:13-14, Proverbs 3:5, Genesis 50:19-20

Bible

We have been in the book of Shemoth which is the book of Exodus. We are at the ten plagues. We are also doing some from Proverbs People.

Read-Out-Louds

We finished reading, "The Thanksgiving Story", by Alice Dalgliesh. I decided to do a no-nonsense book, so we started "Flat Stanley" by Jeff Brown. As you can image the kids love it and we are going thru it at light speed with them asking for more!  Another book we started is "Roanoke: The Lost Colony" by Bob Italia.

For our poetry, "A Child's Introduction To Poetry" by Michael Driscoll and" Dancing Teepee"s, by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve.
Dancing Teepees
Physical Education

We have put PE on hold this semester so we can catch our breath after so much busyness.
Little Man is doing karate and with both kids we are doing stretching, jump roping, scooters, and what ever fun stuff we can think of.

Therapy and Appointments

Bug had all of her therapy this week and we have had an appointment free week. Horse therapy is off this week. We will start back next week for the new session.

American Indian Prayer Guide

We have been praying about the Natchez Indian tribe. We learned that they are mound builders and they occupied the area around St. Louis. We looked up some history on mound builders on the internet to find out more.

We located the area on the map and stamped our passports.

History & Geography

In the Story of the USA book 1 the kids heard about a familiar face from last year. (I love it when my kids do that without me prompting them or reminding them.) The beloved Queen Elizabeth of England. How she was determined to stop Spain from getting to wealthy in the New World. She sent colonies over to the New World. The colonist where hoping to find treasures and  find gold. The first colony was Roanoke Island of the coast of North Carolina. Which disappeared and we still don't know what happened to them. I read and article over the summer about them finding some clues just recently. I will have to look it up for the kids later.

The kids learned about Jamestown, Virginia and John Smith in which my kids  were expecting the Disney version!
Some other topics this last week included Squanto and how he helped the Pilgrims.  We made a mobile on Squanto and how he helped the pilgrims.
Do you think he got a little out of hand. He sure does know how to lighten up a day with being silly. He is the class clown in our one school room. I think he shows off more when the camera comes out! Show off.
This is a simple craft from History Pockets.
Look at that face! She was being a little ornery that day!

We did another History Pocket craft on the Mayflower. The kids had to write a sentence about what we learned about the Pilgrims on the Mayflower

We mapped out the Mayflower's voyage.

.
Language Arts, Math, and Misc Studies

This week in art class the kids painted their hand sculptures. What a fun class this has been. We may do another session when this one is done.
Little Man is giving his hand a high five!
Little Man's is army inspired and painted camouflage. His cast for some reason was the only one with that much arm.
What a simple craft. The teacher basically poured plaster of paris into a kitchen cleaning glove that was turned inside out. I would of never thought of that.
Bug is waving her hand to the camera. She wants to make her hand a  jewelry holder.
She must of had an extra large glove! She put finger nails on it. Which we are suppose to paint with nail polish. I'm not so sure about the nails! They look a little creepy to me. In the eyes of my little girl they are perfect for the hand.
Just when I think I know what she was going to do as a design she trows me a wrench. I was expecting flowers or maybe bugs. She did spots on one side and with red-not pink or purple. Which her pallet had those colors in the beginning. Love it -- she stepped out of her comfort zone.
We also had a field trip to the zoo with some friends. It was a beautiful day and perfect weather! The kids have been interested in penguins so we took a picture of them at the exhibit.
Bug is learning about land forms, continents, and the oceans in her Life Pac. The 4th grade Life Pac have a drastic jump in the content compared to the 3rd grade one. Which isn't bad but I foresee it going into next year again.

We are learning about the elections, president, and voting. We borrowed a few books and videos from the library on the subjects.

Bug has being doing Times Tales. We are doing the DVD version along with the mini flip book. She is catching on to it fast.

I am grateful that Little Man makes schooling him easy. He catches on to concepts quickly. Having a 10 year old special needs child who is challanged in every area makes it a big blessing on my end. Except if I could get him to slow down and write neater!!!!!! Yea, it can be that bad at times. He is still young and full of energy. I have to remind myself he is a boy.

Science

Bug has found a new pet this week. It is a Box Elder beetle. Other than that we are still learning about insects, dinosaurs in science.
Have a blessed week
