Did you know that their are similarities between tooth enamel and eggshells, many classroom teachers use hard-boiled eggs to demonstrate proper dental hygiene. However, these experiments don't have to be left to the classroom alone. Homeschoolers can do this easy experiment. Using items found in just about every home.
Before you begin you will need to:
1. Boil a couple of eggs, just in case one gets cracked in the cooking process
2. Dark Soda enough to cover up the whole egg. You can also use one with diet soda to see if the effect is different.
3. Plastic container with a tight fitting lid.
4. Tooth paste with fluoride and a tooth brush.
5. Cup of water and a towel.
Talk about the importance of brushing their teeth every day, making sure to explain about plaque and how, over time, it can leave teeth discolored and stained. Ask them what kind of drinks they think my do this to our teeth.
1. Pour the soda in the bowl. Good thing daddy is not home, we are using his soda!
2. Put the egg in the soda and leave it there overnight. Ask them to give a hypothesis with what they think will happen to the egg.
Check the egg in the next day. You will notice that the eggshell is stained from the soda. Talk about the eggshell and tooth enamel and ask your child what he thinks you can do to remove the stains.
3. Give your child the toothbrush and a tube of fluoride toothpaste. Have them put the toothpaste on the toothbrush and let them brush the stains off the egg.
Pretty neat experiment for the kids to learn about the importance of taking care of our teeth.
