Struggling Readers

If you have a child you struggles to read you know how frustrating it is on both ends. As her teacher also, I sometimes catch myself wondering if I am missing something. That is on a bad day when I struggle with my own discouragements of her having such difficulties. Usually, it is when she has a full melt down. I feel her tears and wish I could be in her shoes just for a short time so I can have a screaming, crying, full blown meltdown. Not all days are that severe and we have lots of good days that out weight all the many bad days. I appreciate the fact that I have been able to teach her. It has been such a joy to watch her learn things and when she accomplish things, I cry tears of joy for her.

Last night Bug, read two pages of her bible to Daddy. She just went and sat down by Daddy and said, "look Daddy I am going to read the bible to you."  It wasn't even school time. She was self motivating to want to read. That is a big step in itself. After wards she had me sit down so she could read it to me.

Last Saturday during Havadala service, the Rabbi's wife helped her read a paragraph out loud to a group of people. She did good, even with the sounding out of the Hebrew words. Granted, I think she has remembered a lot of the service that we attend weekly. She still had to decode a lot of the words. She asked if she could have a turn to read.

We have a long way to go for her to be where she needs to be. It feels good as her Mom, and teacher to see her motivated to want to read. I have used some wonderful programs to help her. I will share that in another post. I just wanted this post to be about her and what she has accomplished, not about what I have used. It has been a good week with her reading and tying her shoelaces. May the Lord bless you and keep you this day.

  2. That is great to hear! As one who struggled with reading for a long, long time, I've got to say that she's doing great to be able to read out loud to people. Fantastic!
