Wisdom of 5 year old eaching 8 year old-Potty Training
January 05, 2011
Sometimes things come out of your kids mouth that are a little shocking. Well, even comical the more you think about it.
Little Man took it upon himself to teach his big sister who is 8, how to know when to go potty. Bug is still in diapers due to low muscle tone. She doesn't feel when she has to go to the bathroom.
Here is how the conversation went.
Little Man-"Bug you know how I know when I have to go to the bathroom. You see my brain tells my tummy, that tells my bottom that I have to go. I then go to the toilet. So, I listen to my brain tell my tummy that tells my bottom that I have to go. That is how I do it. Now, I know you don't have a brain." (Luckily for him Bug didn't get it and it went right over her head. She would of probably punched him if she understood his statement)
Daddy had a talk to him and had to explain that she does indeed have a brain. He wasn't being mean. He is my logical kid who likes to explain things and how they work. He is always asking how questions. He truly wanted to help her go potty. The more I thought about how in the world he came up with this I remembered a conversation we had in the past few weeks. He had asked me, "how do I know I have to go to the potty?" I told him something simple like, "your tummy feels it" Little Man said, "I know that but how does it feel it" I then went on explaining something about how are brain is a messenger to the rest of our body that tells it things to do.
Their you have it, she must not have a brain in his eyes because it doesn't speak to her to go potty or something along that line. Well, okay maybe its not really wisdom. In his eyes he was giving her advice on his experience of his limited time of going to the bathroom. This all from a 5 year old who we struggled with potty training. Then learning why he didn't want to go potty. He didn't want to be a big boy because he would have to take care of his big sister. After we found that out he was pretty much potty trained that very same week. Little does he realize it he is taking care of her in his own special way.
Bug told him thanks after his serious heart to heart talk. A few hours later she sat on the toilet and came running to her brother and said, "I listened to my brain talk and I went to the toilet and nothing came out."
Don't you just love it? Have a blessed day.
