Week In Review-Week #17

We are in Sonlight Core C week #17

Scripture memory this week: We are reviewing all our previous scriptures.

Our read-out-loud is: The Cricket in Times Square, Aesop's Fables, and A Poke in the I.

We didn't do school on Monday as it was still a vacation day. I am glad to get back to our regular schedule. Bug was starting to fall apart without a schedule.

Tuesday-We finished one day that I didn't complete in week 16 of Sonlight. The kids learned about Joan of Arc and how she led the French troops to victory. Than later the English captured her and burned her at the stake as a witch. I found a mini-series on You tube about Joan of Arc.

The kids then learned about the country of Japan and the Samurai Warriors. Little Man played all day that he was a Samurai Warrior. For Hanukkah he got the Imaginex Samurai Palace. He was excited to learn about the Samurai.

The kids made up a Haiku and  then colored some pictures from Haiku poetry.

For PE the kids played basketball and learned some of the basics of the game.

Wednesday- The kids learned about the invention of the 1st printing press and Johann Gutenberg and the first book that was printed was the Gutenberg Bible in 1456. We stamped some sentences with alphabet stampers to create our own printing press.

Much to the kids dismay we learned that the castles and knight in armor were no longer effective against gunpowder. Thus it was the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Modern Era in history.

We traveled to North and South America. In North America we touched on the Mound builders. Then we spent the majority of the week in South America. We prayed about the believers in Uruguay and Venezuela. We learned that Uruguay is the smallest country on the continent of South America.

Thursday-We traveled to the country of  Peru, and Columbia. We went back in time of the Inca warriors of Peru and the large empire that the Incas occupied.

Next stop was the Incas, Aztecs, and the Mayan culture. The kids learned about the bartering system and we played a made up game and bartered for some sweets. Then our most favorite thing in the whole world to eat-CHOCOLATE- we are very grateful for the Aztecs.
The kids created their own Aztec shields with lots of feathers. I think we are going to have feathers floating around the classroom for awhile.:0).

Friday- Little Man completed his Beginning Geography book this week which he learned about the continents, oceans, and different types of maps.

Bug completed her Handwriting Without Tears book from last year. I told you writing is a slow process and it has taken a long time. She is a trooper and completed it. I am not sure which direction I am going to take now as she is not ready for cursive.

Bug is still study about the state of Washington and the apple harvest process. Today was a catch up day in math, reading, and grammar.
