My Review:

This is the 2nd book in this series. The first book is called “The
White City.” I haven’t read the 1st book in the series.

The setting of this story is in 1932 during The Great Depression. The story is about a young widow Cecile and her three year old daughter Millie Mae.

 Cecile has to start looking for work to survive and lets her daughter stay with a neighbor to care for her for the day while she is searching for employement. When she returns home she finds out that her precious daughter has been taken to the Tennessee Children’s Home Society to be adopted. Despite her efforts to get her daughter back she is told that she is unfit to care and raise her. She is told that she already signed her rights away. Which is completely false and Cecile is determined to get her daughter back.

I knew that children were taken away like that in the past but didn’t know it revolved around a certain individual. However I wasn’t aware of Georgia Tann and what this one woman did is appalling and horrible. I had to look up information myself to find out more because I was curious about it. She sold an estimated 5,000 children!

An unlikely ally comes from a young lawyer Percy Vance who is working for Miss Tann. As they are searching for Millie they find other children living in deplorable conditions as they are waiting to be adopted. It will break your heart.

The story is a mixture of fictional and non-fiction with its characters. This is a historical crime suspense novel that will have you on a roller coaster of emotions. I found myself with all kinds of anger with Miss Tann and what she did until her death in 1950. It’s hard to swallow.

This is a Christian based story of one woman’s faith and determination to get her daughter back. The series is base off of true historical crimes. The story is well written and I look forward to reading the first book in the series and the other that follow.

Liz Tolsma is a popular speaker and an editor and the owner of the Write Direction Editing. An almost-native Wisconsinite, she resides in a quiet corner of the state with her husband and is the mother of three. Her son proudly serves as a U.S. Marine. They adopted all of their children internationally, and one has special needs. When she gets a few spare minutes, she enjoys reading, relaxing on the front porch, walking, working in her large perennial garden, and camping with her family.
