How do you prepare your kids for a world that is anti-God? I know a few
families who sent their kids away to college and their kids are no longer
believers in God. I couldn’t image how heartbreaking that would be. Pilgrim's Rock, LLC and The Unbreakable Faith Course is a great way to equip our teens
for all those naysayers against Christianity and to teach them to defend the
faith.
The Unbreakable Faith Course is an online course that I received two years
access to the course. Along with the online component I received two physical
books that go with the course, God the Reason: How Infinite Excellence Gives
Unbreakable Faith and The Box: Answering the Faith of Unbelief written by Craig
Biehl.
The course is intended for high school students or even adults. If you want
to take the course for a high school (1) credit you will also need the two
textbooks that are available as a paperback or as a PDF and the online The
Unbreakable Faith Course. The course is laid out to complete in 36 weeks or you
can easily adjust it for less. You can set the pace you want with this
self-paced course.
The Unbreakable Faith Course
A brief tour talking about the course |
After I received an email for access to the course I was taken directly to
the course. The layout is easy to navigate. There is a tutorial that walks you
briefly through the course.
You can print out a syllabus for your records, which I like having these in
my son’s records for curriculum he uses. The syllabus lays out the assignments,
quizzes, and test for the complete course which corresponds to the online
course.
The Course is broken up in 6 Parts with a total of 38 videos. In each
section you have you reading assignments that you need to complete to finish
the assignment in each section. Each part has a quiz and the last part is a
final examination. The 5 quizzes and final examination are self-grading.
All the links are on the website for the videos and are self contained, you
don’t go to another platform to watch the videos. You can enlarge the video
within the current program or keep it smaller. Once you are done watching the
videos it automatically checks it off for you. You can go back and watch any of
the videos again and it won’t uncheck anything either.
We finished Part 1: My son was able
to complete the 9 videos and the quiz for Part 1. To complete this section you
need to read the entire book The Box and Chapter 1 & 2 of God the Reason.
I’ll talk about those in a bit.
The videos in this section are anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes long. The
teacher is Craig Biehl who is the lecturer. During the lectures you see a
series of pictures, scriptures, and supporting material for the topics. With
the book already read the videos build upon what you have already learned. It
goes over what is apologetics and builds a foundation to understand a deeper
meaning of God and our walk with Him.
TImed Quiz |
The first quiz that my son took is timed for 25 minutes and can only be
taken once. On the right side of the screen you can see your time and the
number of questions. No pressure right!
You cannot skip ahead in the video section until you have completed the
previous video. It is designed to be completed in order and the concepts build
upon on another. So far the videos have been no longer than 15 minutes. Each
part ends with a timed quiz. The quiz can only be attempted once.
Within the dashboard you can contact the professor which is Craig Biehl if
you have any questions at any point during your studies.
The Box: Answering The Faith of Unbelief
The book is laid out as a conversation between Mr. A (atheist/agonistic)
and Mr. C (Christian) who are neighbors. Mr. A thinks he can outsmart Mr. C
just like every other Christian he has encountered. He finds himself thinking
more about some of Mr. C’s responses to his debates they have together.
The book is laid out as a conversation between Mr. C & Mr. A |
Mr. C uses the analogy of an antique box and his garage and asks Mr. A what
is in them but, Mr. A has never been or seen the inside of his garage. Nor can
he guess what is in a closed box in his office. Not knowing what is in both Mr.
A admits that we are human with limitations and how can we claim to know for
sure everything in the universe that with certainty that there isn’t a God. The
author adds insight between the conversations with some commentary of his own
on the topics.
This book is broken up in three main parts with sub-topics within each
part. Some conversations covered, “denying miracles”, “Seeing the evidence that
God exist.” This is just a few topics in this book.
The book was easy to read. My son and I read this together in a little
over a week adding it to our school schedule. We had many interesting
conversations that were also covered in the video segments.
God the Reason: How Infinite Excellence Gives Unbreakable
Faith and The Box: Answering the Faith of Unbelief
This book is a bit more informational and has a lot more depth to it. There
are lots of scriptures and quotes of theologians throughout history like
Spurgeon.
It starts out establishing that God
is eternal since the Beginning and paraphrased, “God is the author and
explanation of the universe.”
The book goes on to dismantle the atheist who trust in science and reason. As
a Christian we have a blind faith. How can we stand up to their arguments? The
book is in laymen’s terms. We read several chapters in. I briefly skimmed ahead
and the book tends to build upon itself to understand Apologetics that help you
clearly see with information that simplifies and with clarity that God is who
He says He is. All that is deeply paraphrased by me!
How did we use The Unbreakable Faith Course in our homeschool?
After I logged in and got everything set up and got myself acquainted with
the website. I decided to print out the syllabus for our records.
At first I wasn’t sure if the course would be over my 14 year old son’s
head. I decided that he could grasp the material. We read The Box together in a
little over a week. It was an easy and informative book.
After we completed the book we read a few chapters of God the Reason. This
book was not as easy of a read but equally good and we slowed down a bit at
this point moving forward. After reading up to chapter 2 we could now watch the
video portion of the lessons. We went on to watch Part 1 together and talking
about the context of the videos and the book itself.
My son took the first quiz and he didn’t pass the quiz. The timed quiz made
him a bit nervous and he was wishing he took notes throughout.
Part 2 with the videos |
We dived into
Part 2 with a notepad in hand and will continue to move ahead slowly and steadily.
Pilgrim's Rock, LLC and The Unbreakable Faith Course is good and Biblically
sound. Even if you disagree with some concepts the information is good and a
great resource for you youth growing up in a world that doesn’t care much for
our faith.
