Blogging Through the Alphabet-Letter A

This is my first time to try and blog through the alphabet. All kinds of amazing words start with the letter A. For some reason I keep coming back to a Hebrew letter Aleph. It’s the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet.

When I first started teaching Hebrew to my children we started with the Aleph and I gave them honey and apples to eat. This is a Jewish tradition when teaching your child their first Hebrew lesson as a reminder that His word is sweet. It’s a lesson my children remember to this day. Oh taste and see that the Lord is good. Psalms 34:8
My kids were so young in those pictures and I love that they still consider God's word sweet!

Hebrew reads from right to left just incase you aren't aware of it.

What else makes the Aleph so special?

Aleph is the first letter in the word emet אֶמֶת which means truth.

Aleph also is the first letter of the name of God:

אֱלֹהִים Elohim-It is the first name that we see of God’s name. In the beginning God( Elohim אֱלֹהִים) created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

אֵל EL-is for god. Yes, a little "g". Used with God and the other names following after El denote an attribute of God. A little more complicated than what I explained. This is very-very general.

אֵל שָׁדַּי El Shaddai-God almighty, the all sufficient one. A scripture is: When Abram was ninety-nine years old, The Lord appeared to him and said, “I AM God Almighty” (אֵל שָׁדַּי)

עֶלְיוֹנִי El Elyon- God most high. God’s strength, supremacy, and sovereignty.

עוֹלָם אֵל El Olam-The Everlasting One. Olam means universe, world, space, and or time.

I could go on and on with the names of God. I think that the Aleph is a very meaningful and special letter.

    1. I find it fascinating that God is in charge of all details. Hebrew is an amazing language that has so much depth in His Word that our English language just scratches the surface.

  11. Thank you for sharing your love of Hebrew. I did not know that it reads right to left, so now I'll need to go back and look again at my pictures from the synagogue where our family friend was married a few years ago.
