Reading Eggs Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

Reading Eggs is a favorite for my 17 year old special needs daughter. I’m excited to share another review of Reading Eggs from Blake eLearning Inc. I received a 1 year subscription.

Reading Eggs has won several awards throughout the years. If you would like to see why they have accumulated so many awards you can sign up for a free 30 day trial to determine if it works for your family.

Reading Eggs is an online subscription program. You will need internet access to use the program. This will work on a desktop computer, laptop, iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. You also need audio to use the program.

Reading Eggs also has different programs specifically designed for varies ages.

Reading Eggs Junior -ages 2-4

Reading Eggs –ages 3-7

Fast Phonics- age 5-10 this is a new feature!

Reading Eggpress –ages 7-13

Mathseeds ages 3- 9

There are some new features available:

Fast PhonicsSet up as the same style as Reading Eggs this is what I think of as remedial or extra practice for kids ages 3-7 who are struggling readers. Each level focuses on 1 letter through fun activities, videos, and books. a fun theme of Yetis that live on a wonderful mountain covered in snow.

Mental Minute- this accompanies Mathseeds to help with those dreaded math facts fluency. The levels get more difficult as you proceed to help you get those math facts out quickly.

Monthly Themes-to mix up the fun each month Reading Eggs and your mascot Reggie are having monthly themes. You will get limited time items to shop for and discover what will be waiting you each month in the store.

Another new feature is that Reading Eggs is now available on Android!

When you log in for the first time you are directed to take a placement test to determine reading level. If your child doesn’t have any reading skills you simple start on lesson 1. Don’t worry if they can’t read.  However, if you plan on doing the Reading Eggpress you will need to take a placement test. As a parent I can adjust the level anytime. We have had a few years in between that we didn’t use the program and all the information is kept as long as you are using the same log in information. Thank goodness or my daughter would have been really discouraged.

My daughter used exclusively the Reading Eggpress so I will focus on this one. Reading Eggpress has 220 core comprehensive questions, 212 spelling words, and over 2,000 books in their library. The library has a wide variety of genre to read. You have the ability to search by author, series, topic, title, reading age. The books can be bookmarked too.

Printable Worksheets

Another feature is printable worksheets for each of the lessons.

Several ways look at your students progress

You can sign up for emails to follow their progress or you can view the progress report on the website.

Each child will have a dashboard that keeps track of their level and their golden eggs which allows your child to purchase items for their virtual world. You can also create your own avatar and purchase items with your golden eggs. They earn awards throughout this online reading program.

Dashboard

You have several options  in your dashboard.

Lesson Map

Lessons- is where you work your map. Each lesson has a certain book tied to each lesson. This is nice as it exposes your child to different genres that they might not have chosen themselves. Within each lesson you work on spelling, vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and other related concepts. The questions are multiply choice and they have to get a certain percentage to move on to the next level on your quizzes and test. You can redo them as many times as needed.

A completed quiz and she will earn golden eggs and a new trading card

This is where you earn those wonderful golden eggs my daughter loves. She loves buying pets, clothes, dress up her avatar, and house. She also enjoys the trading cards and his quick to get my attention to show me the newest one she collected.

English skills helps with spelling words

English Skills- covers spelling words. It goes over phonemes with a video. You have questions and a test afterwards. It gives you feedback at the end.

If you have a competative child this is a great way to test your skills with others

Stadium-has four games that are spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and usage. You can choose which level to play and if you want it easy or difficult. Another feature is you can play online with others to compete against. The way you win is answering several questions to beat the other player.

Library- there are book galore from non-fiction and fiction e-book. There is a huge variety of books from sci-fi, animals, and much more. You just click around the library to find books you want to read. If you want to learn about science you click on the  science supplies or about planets click on the planet mobile. Just move your mouse around.

Targets-are goals or achievements that you have accomplished like writing a review on a book, getting so many pets, completing a lesson, shopping, and more. This is another way the kids can see their accomplishments.

Mall-what else do you do at a mall besides shop! This is the area you get to spend all those hard earned golden eggs. You can buy pets, clothes, accessories for your avatar, and items for your apartment.

Apartment-this is home where your avatar gets to enjoy the bounty of those golden eggs you spent proudly. You can see your faithful pets follow you around. You keep your trophies and trading cards here too so you can admire your hard work.

My daughter can see her stats in her trophy room

Trophy Room- this is another place to gaze upon your trophies and see your stats from your achievements. You can even print off certificates if you want.

Several arcade games to play

Arcade- 11 arcade style learning games to play. To play you just need to have a certain amount of golden eggs to play. The games are education games but really fun to play.

How did I use Reading Eggs in my Homeschool?

Like I mentioned earlier my daughter is crazy about Reading Eggs. She is almost 18 and has special needs. Thankfully the last time all of her information was kept from the previous times. She is currently on level 55. She did not have to take a placement test. Personally my daughter would do better and go at a faster pace in a lower level. However she knows she is older and wants to do what older kids do. She is still learning at this level and I just need to help her a bit more.

We are in summer school and I let her choose how long she wanted to stay on. In the school year I always schedule this as the last assignment of the day. Typical she would do anywhere from 3 to 5 days a week and spent just an hour or more on several lessons. For her senior year this will be included as part of her language arts curriculum and she will be more directed with her time or the last assignment of the day.

My daughter is able to go to the bookmark I set up for her on the classroom computer so she can sign in by herself. She doesn’t usually do the English Skills, Arcade, or the Stadium. Every once in awhile she will venture into the arcade but she likes to save her golden eggs to buy things for her avatar to live happily ever after with her animals in her cozy apartment and have fun shopping at the mall.

My daughter is working on one of her lessons

The rule is that she has to first do a lesson before she shops or goes into her apartment. Each lesson has its own books. After she reads it she has to answer a set of 10 comprehensive questions. For the most part she is independent. Some lessons take her several tries to get a passing score. Usually, I try to stay close so I can help her read the questions and decide which multiply choice question it is.

My daughter is reading Black Beauty

I have her read her own book from the library twice a week. She sets a timer for 15 minutes. She is a slow reader and this is the minimum time I require. Often times she will read a little longer. Currently she is reading Black Beauty which is probably too advanced for her but she is trying hard to read the book. She does explore other books throughout the library too when she gets frustrated. Afterwards she is free to go into any area she wants.

I look forward to watching my daughter’s skill and confidence grow this year. I have seen good results with my daughter's skills. Reading Eggs is an amazing program that I have nothing but praises for.
