Another week finished. It's hard to believe that we have already been doing school for almost 2 months!

We are in Sonlight Core C week #7

Scripture memory this week Colossians 3:20.

Our read-out-loud is Eric The Red and Leif The Lucky. We finished Ginger Pye this week.

Monday-We had all of Bug's therapy today. Little Man did all of his school at the hospital. He is learning about his favorite animal, a raccoon.

Then Bug got a break. Well almost-our new van has a CD player and the kids listened to the addition facts in the van!

We headed down to the synagogue to prepare for a class on how to make and braid challah bread. That took all day as we made enough dough for 40+ people. It was a long day. I have seen more dough than I could of imagined! We had lots of challah bread and the class was a success.

Tuesday- We started out the day with bible as we do everyday. We have been enjoying doing the Grapevine bible study. What a great bible study for kids. My kids love drawing the stick figures. Sometimes it takes longer than I would prefer as my kids can really get into the stick figures! I know I need to slow down! It's just been one of those extremely busy weeks that I wanted to accomplish a lot! You ever feel that way?

Then we learned about the believers in Turkey in our Window on the World book. The kids found Turkey on the map and then stamped their passports.

At PE class today the kids played snakes and rabbits and other games. After wards track was the next activity. Little Man must of ran himself to hard because he was holding on to his side. Poor guy!

We are still in the Vikings and we did activities that didn't happened last week. The kids made Viking runes.

Wednesday- We made a stop in Albania and found it on our map and stamped our passports. We sang our geography songs for Southern Europe.

Little Man started his Beginning Geography workbooks which he loved. Bug worked on her Daily Geography. She is still doing some independent work. Not a lot but I will take what I can!

We revisited the High Holy day of Yom Teruah or better know as Rosh Hashanah which in Hebrew means, "Head of the Year," and as its name indicates, it is the beginning of the Jewish year. The anniversary of the creation, it is the birthday of mankind. The holiday actually takes place on the first two days of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, which is the seventh month on the Hebrew calendar. Later in the evening we headed out to service with our shofars on hand. Which the shofars got blown a lot tonight.
  
Thursday-No school was done as it was a Sabbath so we slept in and enjoyed the day playing and reading. Later in the evening we went to service.

Friday- Made me feel good knowing I choose the 4 day schedule with our Sonlight. With our busy life style it is a blessing. Even though we do school five days a week generally. The four days gives me some time to do make up when we get bogged down with appointments. 

Today we revisited Greece and the kids went down memory lane with what we did with our activities the previous years. Wow, I love it. My kids have remember more than I could of imagined.

I added in a book that is used with the five day schedule because of my kids love of all things maps. We are reading Maps and Globes. The kids made a stick chart map using the ancient stick chart used by the Polynesians. 

We end our day with Art. First we read, "How Artist See the Elements" we are studying the element of earth.

Next we pulled out our ARTistic Pursuits K-3 book two. We learned about Giotto and how he discovered his artistic abilities and looked at some of his artwork. Afterwards the kids got to created their own master piece. 

These are suppose to be a fresco painting. We layered oil pastels on a chip board and the kids had to scratch a drawing into it. They did a Forrest scenery with the main focus on a raccoon. Not quite how I imagined it to look. The kids thought it was a hoot!

 Another week finished. This week I have been a little under the weather. Not sure if I am fighting a cold or allergies. We had a pretty light week. One day I just couldn't keep my eyes opened. I was up most of the night so we just did the 3 R's.

Our read-out-loud is Ginger Pye which we got behind our schedule this week.

Monday-No therapy I had canceled last week with my van breaking down. I am liking not rushing out the door so early and having a full day of school on Monday. Well I better not get to us to it because we have a new used van.

The kids are still study the Vikings. We have been all over the map this week starting in Iceland, Norway, Greenland, and even had a stop in Ireland. The kids did a lot of stamping of their passports.

Bug started her Bob Jones English and Grammar 3 this week. It looks like the first chapter is mostly review of what we just finished up.

Bug is still struggling learning some of her addition facts. We tossed a bean bag back and forth while we said our addition facts. Little Man even joined in and we played for awhile.


Tuesday-The kids are still playing flag football in PE. It ended early because of it raining the last half of class.

After lunch we did the basics and learned about the Christians in Kazakhstan. Little Man is learning his first song at piano. He is learning Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Bug is no longer doing piano. It just wasn't her thing according to her.

Little Man is reading so well. What a relief after all of Bugs struggles with reading. I was beating myself over the head with her wondering at times if I was doing something wrong. Even through I knew inside that her disabilities are the problem not mom.

Then Little Man had his dramatic Dr. appointment that I will remember for years to come. Little Man doesn't see it as being humorous. If you haven't read the post you can read it here. It will make you understand a little more the mind of a little boy. He was up most of the night also. Don't know if that had anything to do with it. He woke up at 1 and didn't fall back to sleep again until 4:30. I was really tired.

Wednesday- I let Little Man sleep in. I did the bible, English, math, reading, and writing with Bug. Then put my daycare Princess2 down for a nap. I layed down for an hour or so until they got up. He had a free day besides him doing  bible and piano practice.

Thursday- we visited the church in Russia, Uzbekistan in our Window on the World book. We got a new date stamper for our passport books. The kids are amazed with the stamper. Doesn't take much to amuse my kids!

We worked on Kansas History and revisited studying Kansas neighboring  states. They also learned that Fort Leavenworth has been used continuously as a military installation longer than any other military best west of the Mississippi river.

Next stop with the Viking the kids made Viking jewelry after they raided my kitchen and stole mom's aluminum foil.

Friday- was gorgeous outside and Little Man just couldn't sit still. I thought about hanging him by his toes! He was practically climbing the walls. We worked on math, English, and writing. Then we had a few errands to run.

I was planning on doing school when we got back home. It was so nice outside so I pulled out the bubbles and we played outside. I am so glad I did. It was such a fun time with the kids. This summer we didn't get outside as much with it being so hot. I guess we better enjoy the nicer weather before we are stuck inside again for the winter. So the Viking runes and art projects, and geograpy will be there next week. I like staying on schedule. I know in the end that all of those crafts don't compare to spending precious time playing with my kids.

On a side note Bugs having fun with her Entomology. I had to put her frozen bugs in a larger container. We now have people even bringing her frozen bugs!

Mom even chased two bugs at the car dealership while daddy was taking a van out for a test drive. Talk about looks from people. Bug would of had complete melt down if I didn't make an attempt. I caught them up against the glass of the dealership and had a lady look out the window at me like I had just lost my mind. I guess I would of been thinking something was wrong if I seen me running around in the mulch and brushes up by the glass. Mom was victories with her catch. Later the woman came by and peeked in the office and Bug was humming loudly and reading her insect field guide. I am sure the woman thought Bug was autistic or something. I got a feeling that I am going to be doing some crazy things in the name of entomology and collecting insects. Oh well my Bug is worth all the stares and talk! I am sure it kinda like war stories of how you catch each bug. I am sure I am going to amuse myself and others in the hobby of collecting insects. Have a blessed week.

We made Viking helmets this week in our history studies. Here is the instructions on how to create your own Viking helmet and costume.

What supplies you will need:

• Gallon milk jug
• Scissors or utility knife
• newspaper
• Masking tape
• papier-mâché glue
• Brown bag, torn into 1- by 4-inch strips or newspaper
• Duct tape
• Faux fur
• blond-colored yarn and ribbon (for a braided wig)

I had to take my horn off and put them on after the newspaper on top of the milk jug. Just a little tip as you read the instructions on the other site.

Lots of drying time. We ended up painting ours.

As you can tell I am a little behind in getting my Week in Review post up. Only by 2 1/2 days:0). It was one of those non-stop weekends that started on Friday.

We are in Sonlight Core C week #5

Scripture memory this week was a review of all the scriptures we have learned in the past.

Monday- We had no therapy my husbands truck broke down so he took the van. I took advantage and double of some assignments knowing that we had  a few outside events going on this last week. It was a good thing I doubled up on Monday! We also have a  large craft to work on.

We are still exploring the Vikings and have some fun crafts planned this week. We learned about the Animism and Buddhism and compared them to what the Bible says about their beliefs.

We also sang our geography song about Canada.

We are still reading Ginger Pye for our read-out-loud. The kids are still enjoying our poetry selection, "What to Do When A Bug Climbs in Your Mouth" by Rick Walton

Tuesday-PE class the kids are still playing flag football.

The kids learned what their Viking names would be if they were Vikings using this Viking name converter. Find out what your Viking name would be. Of course Little Man is a Viking!

Bug took her last test in Bob Jones English Writing & Grammar 2! Now we can start in her English & Grammar 3 next.

Wednesday- Bug completed her Life Pac History & Geograpy 3 with her unit study on lobster's and Deer Isle, Maine. We learned about the religion of Hinduism and again compared it against God's word.

The highlight this week is our viking hat craft which we started on Monday and finished on Wednesday.

 I have a post going up with the how to do tomorrow on the Viking hat.

 

Don't you love Bug's long braids? Little Man was into the role as a Viking. I mean look at that face!

Thursday-we had an early morning field trip to a fellow homeschooler who has a beehive. She invited the 2011 Honeybee Princess to host the event. Afterward Bug got an unexpected up and personal tour of the hives after everyone left. We had fun going into the hive and suiting up for the event.

 All ready to play with the bees. I think I was the only nervous one.

 It was a chilly day and the bees where not very happy. Bug got her first bee sting on her head. A bee got into her netting. She was not a happy camper. After all that she wants a beehive in our backyard. Which much to my surprise- I am considering starting one. I would have to wait until next spring. I asked lots of questions and looked into it when we got home. With Bugs love of everything bugs - what better way to cultivate her love of entomology.

It was pretty late when we got home and we just did research on bees online and watched some YouTube videos on bees and starting up a beehive. That was our extend of school.

Thursday was also Bug's first entomology class. They had beetle racing to welcome in a new year. Bug's beetle won the second round of races.

It is official -we are catching bugs. Which I should of been doing all summer. Duh! I now have a container in my freezer to store the bugs in until we can pin them! What a great edition our mystery bug of been to her collection. Can I just hit myself with all the great bugs we seen this summer. We caught her first one when we came home. A Gray Hairstreak Moth and on Saturday I caught a Southern Green Stink bug for her. I can't believe I am catching bugs without my children. I even take a jar out to the garden now-just in case! I look for bugs now and it's even without my Bug showing me!

Friday- we had lots of errands to prepare for a Seminar at our congregation on Saturday. We spent the morning running around. 

Then we were suppose to have our first Kansas History class with our homeschool group. Except my van broke down. When it rains it pours. First hubby's truck and then I get stranded in Wal-mart. It is working now and we are officially looking for a new van! So by the time we got home we were spent and I didn't even consider anything school related!

We are still studying the Vikings this week in our history. The kids are having a hay day with the Vikings. As you can imagine this is most exciting for Little Man who gets into the whole sword, shield type of thing. Bug loves it also just not quite as much as her brother.

As you can tell I am getting into my new digital scrapbooking software! I found the Viking Longboat craft from this site. 

I would recommend that you prepare the boat before the day you do the craft if you have younger kids.I prepared the boat and let the kids decorate it anyway they wanted to. The boat has a lot of details but don't be intimmidated by it. It is really quite easy to do. I did two boats.

You will need the following supplies:

1 Quart or Bigger Carton

1 Straw & 12 Skewers

Regular Masking Tape

String or Thread

Paper Bag

Instructions for the Viking Longboat

I would also recommend clay to hold your mast into the boat. We had to glue the clay in after it dried. The cartoon made it not hold with just the clay. I used Elmers glue and it has held up to  all of Little Man's battles.

Bug wanted a horse head with a mermaid tail for her boat.

Little Man wanted the dragon head and tail with a Narnia type boat. I know it is suppose to be Vikings. He is into Narnia now and wanted it to look somewhat like the Dawn Treader ship.

We added shields and oars to our Viking err Narnia Longboat ships.

Next up was the mast for the ship.

Little Man's Viking Narnia Longboat.

We are learning about the Viking in our history studies. What better way the enhance the learning by adding a craft to the mix. With my kids the crafts make a lasting memory of the subject. The Viking longhouse craft has been no exception.

This is Little Man's Viking Longhouse.

Supplies:

1. Shoe box. I used a child size one.

2. Paper grocery sack or the brown mailing wrap.

3. Clear tape, Elmer glue, and scissors.

4. Utility knife or an exacto knife.

5. Toilet paper or paper towel roll.

6. Flat piece of cardboard to make roof slant. Cut it a little bigger than the size of your shoe box lid

7. Dry moss for the roof covering

8. Craft-sticks and something to cut the sticks. I used a small hand pruner. The kids also broke them by hand. I guess I went to slow for their liking!

I prepared a lot of the craft before hand. I would recommend doing so with younger kids. I put the brown paper on the shoe box before hand. This part would have been to much for my kids.

I first cut out the doors. Don't forget to cut the lid also so the door will open. I forgot the lid on the first box.

 Afterwards I wrapped the boxes in the paper.

The kids did the rest of the craft by themselves.

Glue the toilet paper roll in the middle of the lid. This will hold the pitch on the roof up.

Bend the cardboard in the middle. Add some glue to the top of the toilet paper roll. You will need clear tape to hold the roof down to the shoe-box lid.
 
We ended up stuffing crumpled up paper inside the roof too. Then we added the moss at the edges. You will add glue inside the easement of the roof and have the kids stuff the opening with the moss. Add glue to the top part of the roof and let the kids have a hayday adding the moss. Beware it gets really messy now! That's okay the kids had a lot of fun.

I could only find the painted green moss. I would recommend the unpainted moss. We had green hands, faces, table, and just about everywhere we touched. Glue and green painted moss was not a good mix. However it did clean up nicely on the tables. The kids took a few washes.

Glue the craft-sticks on the shoe-box. Let dry for a whole day if your kids are anything like mine. They went glue happy. The kids made furniture out of the craft-sticks. They also made a fire pit out of rocks.

We are addicted to figures around here. I picked these Viking figures up at Hobby Lobby awhile back. I put them in hiding until we learned about the Vikings.

My kids had fun and learned a lot about the Vikings. 

*Update 1/2019 my kids still remember this craft and they also recall a lot about the Vikings because it was hands on learning.

We have had another busy week filled with Dr. appointments. It has been one of those weeks that I wasn't very motivated and lacking sleep. I had to force myself to get done what we did get done.

We our on Sonlight Core C week #4

Our scripture memory this week is John 3:16. We also went over a previous learned scripture from last year. Psalms 23 and Psalms 1.

Monday we had no therapy and we finished a full day of school. Little Man is starting to read sentences now. He is pretty psyched about being able to read a whole sentence rather than single words.

This week we are starting our history and geography studies of the Vikings. We found Iceland, Greenland, and Norway on the map and stamped our passports.

Bug has been learning about lobsters and the fishing community on Deer Isle, Maine in her Life Pac History and Geography 3. She was the one who picked out this curriculum. Which it surprised me. I wasn't so sure how she was going to like it. There is a lot of writing and questions in each pac.  Much to my surprise she likes it a lot. I am doing the majority of the writing and she is remembering the information better than I can!

Tuesday was an interesting day. We did this mini craft with the Vikings and made up our own Viking Sagas.

The kids played flag football at PE. Before PE started was when the excitement began and yet another mini lesson off the planned weekly schedule. We seen a squirrel touch the electrical wires above and come flopping down on the ground. Poor thing died instantly. The squirrel's hair was all burnt off and he was rather black.

Much to my despair the kids wanted to see the squirrel. That's when the questions came flooding in. Why did he die, what caused his death, why is the electricity in the wires, what happened to the squirrels fur, why is he black, and why are the squirrels eyes opened if he is dead! The questions just got more and more. My favorite one that I had to laugh at from Little Man. Drum rolllllll- IS THE SQUIRREL BIBLICALY CLEAN AND CAN WE EAT SQUIRRELS! Is that just so much like a boy to come up with a question like that. After we got home I answered the question the best I could.
I was saved by Bug's doctor appointment. Little Man wanted me to take a picture of the dead squirrell to post on the blog. As you can see I told him Absolutely NOT! Boys!

We are study the human body and the heart this week in science so the squirrel was mentioned a lot.

Wendnesday we did the basics and a friend took me to health food store that is a little out of town. I have been wanting to go their for awhile.

That night the kids had a live lesson in circumcision. We attended our first Brit Milah-which is basically a circumcision ceremony. I was not sure how the kids would react to this. They did good even with all the blood. I had went over the circumcision prior to the event to prepare them with some of the things they would see and also we went over several scriptures on circumcisions.

Thrusday Bug had another Dr. appointment that took longer than expected. By the time we got home and got lunch ready it was so late in the afternoon. Everyone was dragging and tired. We just took the day off of school.

Friday was the highlight of the week. We made Viking Longhouse craft! It was a very messy craft. It was worth all the mess. The kids had a lot of fun.
