Home School in the Woods is the first thing that comes to my mind when a timeline is needed for history. They have a plethora of history timelines and hands-on history activities to help you teach history in your homeschool. My daughter has been a bit obsessive with American history the last few years and I was thrilled to use Timeline Set: America's History (Explorers to 21st Century) with her. With her autism, I knew she would dig into this timeline and create something special for herself for her senior year.

Timeline Set: America's History (Explorers to 21st Century)

The set came in my email, I extracting the files and had 5 folders. You can print off the timeline figures as many times as needed for your family. You can print on card-stock, printer paper, or a peel and stick paper.

The first folder is the Introduction and Index file. In it you will find ideas on using and displaying your timeline. This file will go over ideas for coloring, notebook, or accordion timelines.

It also has a 2 page index for all the timeline figures included in your set.

Here are the timeline figures with the text and without the text. Both of them include the name and the date of the event

The other files are your timeline figures which include a wall and a notebook size. The wall (2.5” X 4”)or notebook (1.5” x 2.75”)  in size. You can also choose to have a text. The text will give you a brief synopsis of the figure’s history. Both of them have the Name of the person/event and the dates. All the timeline files each have 40 pages. The illustrations are fantastic. They are black and white drawings of a person or an event. Amy Pak is an amazing artist and you will love exploring all the details in each one. My daughter prefers the larger wall set with the text in the timeline. She likes to read the information. + The wall size is easier for her to color. You can have your child add their own information into their timeline if you don’t use the text. The possibilities are unlimited to your imagination.

My original plan was to put together a timeline from her American history curriculum last year. My daughter had her own plans. She didn’t want to choose figures/events and leave out so many after we compared it to her curriculum last year. She wanted to use the Timeline Set: America's History (Explorers to 21st Century) to create her own American history timeline book that she can refer back to and have access to each and every one.

I used white printer paper and put them in a three ring binder. She made herself a notebook and decorated the cover. On the back of the notebook, she added the cover of the set so she knows which timeline she has in her notebook.

She is coloring the timeline figures slowly and working on her book several times in the week.  She enjoys reading each one with some help from me. She will probably remember each one and will be able to recall the information. We also have her refer to her timeline when she is reading a book that relates to American History. It’s fun watching her refer to her timeline book when she hears something from a movie or on TV. She runs to get her book to look up the information.

We have used the timeline figures in the past as a biography/event page and adding information to the page about the topic. My son likes doing this to his book report. It's more like a notebook page but, that is how we have used them often. We have also made several accordion timelines over the years too. I’ve never had the wall space to do a timeline on my wall. We like to do the accordion style timeline and put it in a binder.

For poetry we are reading, "The Oxford Illustrated Book of American Children's Poems" by Donald Hall.

Physical and Health Education

In PE this last week Little Man is continuing to hone is basketball skills. He also had karate and is continuing working towards his orange belt.

Therapy and Appointments

Bug had Speech, Occupation, and Physical therapy this last week. Her food therapy and life skills therapy was canceled this last week.

It was extremely cold this last week and they had to cancel Horse Therapy. Bug was pretty sad about it.

History and Geography

This last week I expanded our study on the wars and did a unit of spy's. You can read about our activities here and here. The kids had a blast this week with all the activities. Talk about school getting done in record time this week so we could do our spy unit. If only it could happen every day!!!!

We are also starting to learn about the Spanish Flu of 1918 and how different it was back in 1918 compared to the flu today.

We found countries on our map and stamped our passport books for all the different places the World Wars is taking us.

Language Arts and Math 

Bug is reviewing many different concepts in math at this time. She has went beyond my expectations with math. It just amazes me how well she does considering her disabilities  and how far she has came in the last year and half. I would of told you that math is a hard subject and that the concepts she just doesn't get it back then. In some areas she is right on or above her grade level. In a few areas she is grades below where she should be. Our kids with disabilities can do so much if we don't put them in a box.

Reading is a different story and I don't foresee her curling up to a book herself. She loves to be read to. She struggles so much in this area. She is still working with, "Reading Eggs" and she loves it. 

Little Man is learning how to write his first book report. I thought it would be a topic I would get some whining with. He is working hard and grasping the concepts. 

In math he is working on subtraction and money. I am doing a Kumon Money workbook with him. He really enjoys this workbook. 

Science

I put aside our Nancy Larson Science for a bit and am letting the kids do science with Science4Us. I am doing a review with them for TOS Crew. My kids love it and I have to time them or they will keep going. More about that when I do my review.

Hebrew, Art, and Misc.. Studies

Little Man is working on the Siddur Edition with Cap IT! Hebrew. This program makes reading Hebrew so easy. He love writing and then translating the Hebrew back into English. Not part of the program per say... but he does it after ever lesson. 

Bug is still working on reading Hebrew with Cap IT! Level 2. She is slow and steady. We are also working on her remembering certain verses and blessings for her upcoming Bat Mitzvah in October.

We went on a field trip to City Arts and had a full day of art. We toured the facitlities and learned about all the crafts you can learn at the center. The kids also weaved, made a sun catcher , and a Japanese lantern. It was a fun day. I will show more pictures in another post.

The kids started doing photography in 4-H this week. It was more of an introduction to what photography is and some of the terminology. I think I am going to be learning a lot myself in the project. Maybe, I'll understand my camera or at least Little Man will learn it and clarify it and teach me!

This is a post that I did back in 2009. I have put the Lapbook on my 4share for others to use. This is the first time I have put one of my lapbooks up. Since then I have purchased a clipart program. I hope you enjoy. This has been one of my kids favorite lapbooks that we have done. We are loving the books this year with the Sonlight Introduction to World History. As soon as I seen the book Archaeologists dig for clues I knew I had to do a lapbook.

We did an excavation dig on paper. I made squares and in each square I had pictures of varies artifacts. Bug had to keep a record of each item on her clip board. First she had to label the square, count the items and then write a description of the artifacts on her clipboard. We did a lot of the things that they did in the book.

We talked about what is an archaeologist and what they do. For some crazy reason Bug thought this was the best part, what kind of things someone would find in our trash". Bug thought that part was neat and she had some interesting observation about our family. We counted items in our backpack and made sure we had all our supplies needed to go out in the field.

Some of the things that the book didn't talk about that I included:

What the bible says about the age of the earth.
What is the differences between an paleontologist and an Egyptologists.
Then we found out which president was an amateur archaeologist. Do you know? Hint-it was our third president.

We measured artifacts and added some famous archaeologist. I added some that had biblical discoveries. I had to include the discovery of Kings Tut's tomb. To me that is an amazing find!

We had fun with this book. In a few weeks we are going to dig in the dirt and unearth our own artifacts.

I think my kids have really enjoyed and learned even more than I could of imagined during our study of Egypt. The other day ago I walked into the classroom and both kids had the tangram blocks out and had them erected up like a triangle. I had no idea what they were doing. When I asked, Bug said, "mom these are all pyramids, over here is the Valley of the kings and this here is the pyramids at Giza with the queens pyramids. Can't you tell Mom? It made me smile. Sometimes I wonder how much they really pay attention. It is so refreshing when something like this happens. As a mom who educates her children it's moments like these that you know that all the hard work is paying off. I wish I would have had my camera ready. Little decided to do a demolition to the site- much to Bug's dismay.
