Art in History
August 20, 2010
Our homeschool support group meets once a month in what we have dubbed," Art History class".We are using the grant from the National Endowment for Humanities called Picturing America. These pictures in this set are absolutely amazing. Each package has 40 pictures in it with some of America's greatest artistic masterpieces. It has both contemporary and historic. They have pictures from artist like Winslow Homer, Bingham and many pictures of monuments and crafts like quilts, pottery and baskets. They are large and my favorite-LAMINATED. With the picture comes a teacher resource book that is filled with a wealth of information, questions, and book selections for different grades. The resource book tells you what type of art it is.
Three of use happened to have a packet in our homeschool group and we were able to break up the classes in three groups. This particular class I got a chance to teach the Pre-K-2nd graders.
My class was based off the painting by Winslow Homer, "The Veteran in a New Field" and Alexander Gardner photo of Abraham Lincoln's last photo before his assassination.
I didn't want to deal with the Civil War to much for the grade I was teaching. I briefly explained the war and focused on Abraham Lincoln and his character. We read the book, "Honest Abe" by Edith Kinhardt.
After every lesson we do a craft or painting of some sort. I had the kids built log cabins out of Popsicle sticks and glue a penny of Lincoln staring out the window. Then we painted our canvas stove pipe hats and ate lincoln log candy.
