Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids a TOS Review
August 17, 2016
We have been learning some Spanish in our homeschool the last few weeks with Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids and their Starter Set 1. I received a physical set.
This is a
complete 20 week curriculum that is hands on and a lot of fun.
Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids and their Starter
Set 1 includes the following materials for Levels 1-3:
DVD with videos for Levels 1-3
Guide for Teachers and Parents for Levels 1-3
Workbooks for Levels 1-3
Flashcards Levels 1 to 3
Stickers for Levels 1-3
For a limited time the Starter Set 1 comes with the Go Squish Cardgame!

DVD with videos for Levels 1-3
The DVD includes three videos for Level 1-3 Basketballs
Aren’t for Breakfast, The Little Magic House Part I, and The Little Magic House
Part II. Each level is set up as a Flight and takes you to a different country.
Level 1 is Flight 101 and takes you to Peru. Level 2 is Flight 102 and you
visit Columbia. Level 3 is Flight 103 and takes you to Costa Rica.
This is the main part of the program. You don’t need any
prior exposure to Spanish to teach this. The conversation on the videos is done
in Spanish. No need to worry about that if you don’t know any Spanish. They are
fun and engaging. The videos are designed to make the content easy to grasp with
the vocabulary. You will easily pick up the vocabulary words in the video. You
see the kids doing something that makes you know what the words mean and you
see an object or action for that word. You won’t need to guess what the word
means. The Spanish is spoken much slower so you can hear the pronunciation of
each word clearly.
The videos have three brothers that are all different
ages that you watch in their daily activities. You hear the parent in the background. You will also have other kids from
youngsters to teens involved.
The words are overlaid on the video for kids who do
read. It’s also repetitive with the vocabulary. This is all done in everyday
conversations that will make beginning Spanish practical as you can immediately
start using what you learn in your day to day activities.
Guide for Teachers and Parents for Levels 1-3
The books are in full color and broken down for you to
clearly see where each lesson begins and ends. Each book is a paperback book
with the cover being a heavy duty glossy cardstock. Each book covers the intended
videos. It starts out giving you an overview of the program and what the program
goals are.
Each lesson and activity is broken down in an easy to
understand format. It gives you an estimated time of each lesson. Along with a table
of the vocabulary that will be gone over in the lesson in both English and
Spanish. Each lesson varies from 5 minutes to 40 minutes. I would say the
majority of the longer lessons are video. At the end of the guide is a certificate to
present to your child upon completion of each book.
Three workbooks for Levels 1-3
Each of the levels is in separate workbooks and are in
full color. You have Basketballs Aren’t for Breakfast, The Little Magic House
Part I, and The Little Magic House Part II that go with each of the DVDs. Answer
keys are at the back of each book. All sorts of activities are included in the
workbooks from fill in the blank to crosswords. A county is covered and you get
a bit of a geography lesson on the region.
Flashcards Games for Levels 1 to 3
The cards are color coded for each level. Each level
covers all the vocabulary taught on the three DVDs. The cards have ones that
have pictures and one that have the vocabulary. The cards are light weight.
Sticker Set for Levels 1-3
The stickers are larger stickers that have the vocabulary
words for each level. They are also color coded for each level.
Go Squish Cardgame!
This is an instruction book on how to use the Flashcards
for Level 1-3 to play the game. The game is easy to play with comprehensive
instruction.
How did I use Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids in my
homeschool?
I used this with my 10 year old son and 13 year old
daughter special needs. My son has wanted to learn Spanish and he was excited
to learn even during the summer time.
The kids began with watching the video for Level 1. The
videos are fun and engaging. Both of my kids enjoyed learning from them. They are slow enough
that you can clearly grasp the words without second guessing if you are saying
it correctly. The videos are intended to watch several times until mastery is
achieved in the level you are working with. The Teacher Guide is very helpful
and guides you step by step throughout.
My son did the workbook and he would have his sister
sit with him and tell her that, “he needed help”. He really didn’t but, he was
trying to include her in the activities.
After a video segment we would work on the workbook,
flashcards or play the card games. My kids are not big sticker fans. My daughter
has sensory issues with the stickiness of any sticker. I ended up cutting out the
stickers without taking the backing off and we put it next to the object. I plan
on laminating them so the backing doesn’t come off. The stickers are very
helpful and have brought on a lot of impromptu learning situations and reviews.
You know the best part is that I don’t have to do any
planning! One less thing to worry about in our busy schedule! At the same time
it’s an amazing way to teach Spanish.
My kids have learned a lot of words. I noticed after a
few weeks my kids knew a lot of vocabulary. I was surprised how quickly they caught
on. My son retained a lot more vocabulary than his sister. She did have
problems with pronouncing the words which is due to her speech issues.
I plan on continue using Foreign Languages for Kids by
Kids in the upcoming school year. I am very impressed at the ease of the
program. It is well thought out and my kids are grasping some basic Spanish and having fun with it.
