I am always looking for ways to assist my children to master their math facts. Recently we have been improving their math skills with Math Essentials .
I have been using Math Essentials Speed Wheel Drills for Addition, Math Essentials Speed Wheel Drills for Multiplication with my special needs daughter who is 18. Math Essentials Speed Wheel Drills for Division with my son who is 15. I think reviewing is a good thing to keep those skills fresh no matter how well you think you know them.
Speed Wheel Drills are circles with your main fact family number in the center of the circle. My daughter calls it a clock. Around each circle, you have all your numbers from 1 through 12. All of the speed wheels are arranged in different order throughout the page. A line separates each number and forms a writing space for you to write down the answer to each problem. You take the number that is in the center and figure out your problem with the numbers on the outside of your circle. You check the answers yourself as this will also help reinforce your math facts too.
For each problem, you write down how many problems you get correct and the time it took you to complete the Speed Wheel Drills. Each page has 12 Speed Wheel Drills with a total of 121 pages of just the Speed Wheel Drills. That gives you 1,440 practice drills per book!
The back of each book has a Resource Center. All three books are the same other than the Speed Wheel Drills Solution for the book is for that specific book. A Math Glossary that includes a math dictionary filled with important math terminology.
My son worked on division facts. He likes the timed pace to see how fast he can complete a Speed Wheel. This would have been a great fit for him when he was learning multiplication. He never liked flashcards or animated stories overall. I never liked keeping track of flashcards and storing them.
I would love to see this workbook have perforated pages to just make it that much easier to rip out the pages.
I liked the ease and the independence with my older kids with these. You can track your process whether you use a timer or not. It’s really obvious how fast you finish each speed wheel. They are suitable for all ages. You won’t have older kids feeling like they are too childish. You can easily slip in a page or half a page into your daily math curriculum without making to much busy work.
