His Risk by Shelley Shepard Gray Book Review

Calvin Fisher left the Amish community at fourteen and never looked back. Only his brother’s illness can bring him back to Hart County. Now, as Calvin works to make amends, he meets Alice, a local nursery school teacher, and falls hard for her. But he has a secret that could threaten the happiness he’s finally found.

Alice shouldn’t like—or want—Calvin. He’s English, has a questionable past, and an even more questionable job. Still, she can’t help being intrigued. Though Calvin assures Alice that he’s worthy of her, she’s torn between surrendering to her growing feelings and steering clear of him.

When a sudden surge of criminal activity alarms the community and even targets Alice, Calvin fears that his double life has put everyone he loves at risk. As for Alice, she can’t help but wonder if the brave and honorable man she’s lost her heart to is far more dangerous than she could ever imagine.

My Thoughts:

This is the 4th book in The Amish of Hart County series. I have read all the books in this series so far. I have to say that this has been my favorite one. This can be a standalone book if you haven’t read any of the other books in the series. It was a page turner and I had a hard time putting the book down.

You get reacquainted with Calvin from the last book, “The Gift”. Calvin is Mark’s younger brother. I actually didn’t like Calvin’s character in the last book. I wasn’t sure at first how impressed I would be with Calvin’s character in this book. I thought he would be rough inside and out and that the story would be a bad guy, meets good girl. The bad guy becomes good because of the good girl. I was totally wrong and I should have known better with Shelley Shepard Gray’s books.

The main character is Calvin and Alice. Both characters have strong personalities. Alice has a protective family after her rumspriga years with her good friend. She is a good hearted young lady who loves her work as a preschool teacher. Calvin is concerned for his family and now Alice when he has to come home to help his brother out. With him working undercover with the DEA with the gang he has been involved in he fears for their safety as he moves up the ranks in the gang.

There are a lot of unexpected twist and turns in the book.  Alice best friend Irene puts herself at risk when she befriends an unknown English man with ties to Calvin.

I’m not going to give away to much of the story. I loved this story and I can’t wait till the next book in the series.
