Week in Review -Week #25-2013-2014
February 07, 2014
Were having snow days here in Wichita. Except my kids get to do school. Lots of canceled appointments this week for Bug. We still had a few appointments that we had to go to. I like days like this as life slows down and I'm not rushing out the door to get to yet another appointment.
We are in Sonlight American History Part 2
Romans 12:2
We finished reading, "You Wouldn't Want to be a Secret Agent During War World II! A Perilous Mission Behind Enemy Lines" by John Malam.
We are reading, "Hero Over Here A Story of World War I" by Kathleen V. Kudinkski.
We are reading, "Life in the Dust Bowl" by Sally Senzell.
For Poetry we are reading, "The Oxford Illustrated Book of American Children's Poems" By Donald Hall.
Little Man has had 1 karate class this week. Other than that PE and everything has been canceled due to the snow storm in the Mid-West.
The kids did get to play outside a lot in the snow and came in cold and exhausted.
Bug had Occupational and Physical Therapy this week. It was right before the storm hit.
We did have one appointment that surprisingly didn't get canceled and it was Food Therapy. It was quite an adventure in the snow considering it is across town. She is doing pretty good trying new foods at therapy but, at home it's not as pleasant!
In history this week we are learning about the, "Roaring 20's" leading up to the Great Depression. We talked about the stock market and what it is. I don't think my kids fully understood what the stock market is. That's okay I just gave them a brief overview and how it affected the economy leading up to the Great Depression.
The kids liked learning about the Roaring 20's. I talked about some of the sport figures like Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey. Bug was more interested in the pretty Flappers and the Jazz music that they danced to. I pulled up some songs from that era and had the kids listen to some music.
Our favorite history and geography lesson this week was on the Dust Bowl. We watched a video on PBS. It's an hour long video called, American Experience. I had originally planned on watching it over a few days. Surprisingly, my kids begged me to watch it all. They found it interesting that such a thing could happen. It just happened that day that Grandpa came over to take us out and we talked with him about the Dust Bowl to our destination. He told us stories that he heard from his father. We mapped out where the Dust Bowl started on the Great Plains and found all the states. We then of course stamped or US Passport Book. I am still reading a book on it which will take us into next week.
We are reading a book about the Spanish Flu outbreak during World War I. Little Man got concerned this week because in the book someone's mom passes away. Then he remembered hearing on the news about the Bird Flu and other sickness going around. I had to stop and give out a few hugs and talk to him about some things. My poor sweet boy. It kinda scared him.
Little Man is reading like crazy and has been reading some books in the, "Ready Freddy" series. I have to remind him to read but, once he starts he keeps going.
Little Man finished up his first book report on "Ready Freddy Camping Catastrophe".
We are still working through Kumon money workbook and Math U See with him. He's getting a little tired of the money workbook. I try to only do it 2-3 times a week. I told him we can slow down and do only 1 page a week or a couple of pages and finish it up. He choose the later.
Bug is still reviewing different concepts. I have to say this year has been a challenge for me with her. I'm trying to keep her workload light an not overwhelm her. I shelved all her 5th grade Language Arts and Grammar books I bought this year. It changed drastically with the amount and the content from 4th grade. I knew that the 5th grade activities would be to much for her. I have been putting my own lessons together for her to focus on her needs and her pace. I still don't know what I'm going to do next year.
I also did the same thing with Math. I didn't start her in division this year. We are going through Math Spectrum workbook at a lower grade and then I have been doing CacuLadder with her with addition, subtraction, and multiplication. She is doing Awesome I just don't think she is going to get the concept of division yet.
My kids are still working on Science4Us online. They love it and can't wait to get online to do science. I will tell you more about it later when I do my review for the TOS Crew Review.
Little Man is reading Psalms 1 with Daddy in Hebrew this last week. He is doing awesome. He is still working on the Cap IT! Siddur reading. It's going slower than I expected as he wants to break it all down into English and then do it a few times in Hebrew and spend time writing out some of the lessons. He is really dissecting it. I was thinking we would be done with this curriculum in 2 months like the other Cap IT! programs. He is setting his own pace and enjoying it. I am not going to push him and let him go through it at his own pace since he is content doing what he is doing.
Bug has been struggling with Hebrew these last 2 weeks. It seems like it all just went away. Which isn't uncommon for her. She can still tell you all the sounds of the Alef Bet and the vowels but, reading it has been difficult. Some days are easier than others. I'm not going to worry about it. We are still working on remembering the Torah Blessing Before reading the Torah. She has good days and bad days. I don't push her to much in Hebrew as I don't want to overwhelm her or discourage her.
Art nothing official going on in that department besides the kids making birthday cards for daddy. Little Man has been drawing a Havdala set and cutting it out for daddy's birthday. Bug has a couple of projects going for his birthday.
Little Man is still working on Piano Lesson with KinderBach. I will tell you more about it when I do my review for the TOS Crew Review.
Have a blessed week.
