The Beautiful Garden of Eden by Gary Bower Book Review
February 13, 2017
The Faith that God Built series by Gary Bower uses the same
whimsical style of storytelling as The House that Jack Built, using
rhyme to introduce preschoolers through second graders to favorite Bible
stories. Gary has a well-developed talent for creating engaging narratives that
also teach biblical truths through rhyme.
The Beautiful Garden of Eden tells the story of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, allowing sin to ruin what was perfect and beautiful.

My Thoughts:
I love children’s books. I love illustrations that tell
a story all by themselves just by exploring the pictures. I love being able to
present children with a Biblical story that captures their attention. This
tells the story of Adam and Eve in the garden from Genesis 1-3
This is an 8x10 hardcover book. 30 illustrated full
colored pages. The color choices are bold yet beautiful. Nothing too fancy with
the illustration but, they are still remarkable. Not a lot of details yet, it’s
enough to intrigue you with the colors and illustrations.
ISBN:978-1-4964-1743-5
The story is told in
a sing style rhyming that is repetitive throughout the story. There are some
big vocabulary words that younger kids most likely will not know. I’m all for teaching kids new vocabulary
words. This will have several words that will need some explaining. Some kids
might be able to put together the meaning of the words from the sentences.
Words like gullible, upheaval, calamitous, woefully, and a few other words.
Reading a book is the perfect way to teach vocabulary!
On the last page of the book,
the author directs you to read Genesis 1-3 for the whole story. Also a scripture from Galatians 3:13 which
says, "Christ has rescued us from the curse." This is a very fitting end to this story.
This is a lovely book in a whimsical
storytelling style that is a keeper.
