Good Night, Fireflies by Janet L. Christensen Book Review
February 06, 2020
What do God and fireflies have in common?
Landon will do just about anything to avoid bedtime. He
can't sleep when the shadows turn ordinary things in his room into spookies and
creepies! His fears are put to rest one memorable evening when his daddy
teaches him an important lesson about God's everlasting, ever-present love:
just like the fireflies, God doesn't disappear when the lights go out.
Through the power of prayer, Landon learns that he can
call on God whenever he's scared and find comfort in the love of his Father.
Children will find lasting comfort in relating this familiar image to our
ever-present and loving Father.
My thoughts:
What a sweet story. I have fond memories catching
fireflies as a child. When we moved to a different state I remember being upset
that it was too cold for fireflies. The illustrations are precious and the
illustrator Francesca Pesci does a beautiful job making the story capture your
attention even more so.
I think every kid has fears at night time of the
“spookies and creepies” at some point. The little boy, Landon in this story is
no exception as he is fearful of the shadows in his room when the lights go
out. Landon gets tucked into bed but ends up calling out to his father, because
is getting scared. He wants his dad to stay in the room because he doesn’t want
to be alone. His dad takes him outside to see the fireflies. They watch the
lights dance around in the dark. His dad ask him, questions about where the
fireflies go when there lights aren’t flashing? Landon doesn’t know. Dad and
Landon grab some jars so Landon can see what happens to them when they aren’t
flashing.
Dad goes on to explaining that God is with him
always even if we can’t see him. He gives this example to his son with the
fireflies, even when its lights are not flashing in the dark.
What a sweet story that conveys God is always with
us. We can pray when we are afraid. The words are easy for little ones to
understand while they are exploring the illustrations.
I absolutely loved this book.
