Math is not an easy subject for me to teach and I always appreciate it when I can find workbooks to assist my children in areas that I don't feel adequate in. I worry that they might have gaps in their skills to succeed in upper math. That is where Basic Math Skills Rescue Parts 1 and 2 from Math Essentials is intended to assist with the skills to prepare for the skills needed for algebra.
Basic Math Skills Rescue Parts 1 and 2 is a combination of six books put into two workbooks.
Along with the workbooks you have access to the video library that covers topics from 3rd grade to Algebra.
Basic Math Skills Rescue Book 1 covers whole numbers and integers, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Basic Math Skills Rescue Book 2 digs into geometry, problem-solving, and pre-algebra concepts.
Your Answer Key and Glossary are in the back of the workbooks. Other resources in the workbooks are Important Symbols, Multiplication Tables, Commonly Used Prime Numbers, Squares and Square Roots, Fraction/Decimal Equivalents Tables in the back of the book.
The page format is the same throughout both of the workbooks. At the top of the page, there are Review Exercises. Followed by a middle section for Helpful Tips that gives you relevant information. The bottom half of the page has more problems to work on. The last math problem on each page has a Problem Solving word problem question. The word problems are practical questions that you can use in everyday life.
All the lessons provide examples with step-by-step examples of the concepts. A lot of reviews is included throughout the workbook. A final test is also available for the different topics.
If you need some instructions on the topics you have access to the videos. An access code is provided at the front of the books to view the videos. My son likes that the videos are direct and to the point, from the author Richard W. Fisher teaching each topic. He gives several step-by-step examples of the problems. The videos are located on the Math Essentials website. The code is located at the front of your book and there are codes on the website also to gain access.
My 10th grader has been using Basic Math Skills Rescue Parts 1 and 2. He jumped around in both workbooks. He looked over both workbooks and decided that in Basic Math Skills Rescue Book 1 he could benefit in sharpening his skills with fractions and review decimals & percents. Basic Math Skills Rescue Book 2 he started in problem-solving and will revisit geometry concepts. He has worked on this completely independently and will pull up the videos as needed. We then go and checks his answers. If he has a certain amount of problems wrong I have him go over the video in that area. He uses a notebook to write out the problems when needed. He has been using this several times a week. My son likes that the lessons aren’t endless problems and can be used as a supplement on top of his existing math program. He doesn’t feel stressed like he is doing math for endless hours a day. I plan on him continuing with these workbooks throughout the school year.
We have been pleased with all
the workbooks from Math Essentials in the past. Basic Math Skills Rescue Parts 1 and 2 is a great resource to make
sure your child is ready for upper math concepts or remedial math.
